Charcoal Grate Mod
With this mod, you can use lump or
briquettes. There is enough clearance between the top of the charcoal ring
and the handle to grab the assembly for shaking loose the charcoal dust or for
removing/carrying the assembly.
- Start by welding a 6 1/2" piece of 3/16" steel rod to the existing
charcoal grate at both ends where the gaps are, spacing as evenly as
possible. With the grate in the inverted position, weld a 4" wide
by 6" high handle made of the same steel to the rungs just welded in
place. Use your charcoal ring as a guide for best fit. The
handles should be on the inside of the ring and angled slightly inward.

Place a charcoal grate for the 18" Weber kettle (inverted)
(available at Home Depot) over the Weber grate with it's rungs rotated at 90 degrees. It should
be a perfect fit, like it was made to be there. You can weld the
grates together if you want. I left mine un-welded so I can remove it
and still use
charcoal briquettes without smothering them.
